The formula

Strength (bits) = length x log2(size of the character set). More bits means harder to guess.

What makes a password strong

Length matters most. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. A random 16-character password using letters, numbers and symbols is, for practical purposes, impossible to guess by brute force. A short password with a "clever" substitution like P@ssw0rd is not.

How we generate it

Passwords are built with your browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same one used for encryption keys. We avoid look-alike characters such as 0 and O, 1 and l, so a password is easier to read and type when you need to.

Good habits

  • Use a different password for every account. A password manager makes this easy.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication where you can.
  • Prefer 16 characters or more for important accounts.
  • Never share a password in email or chat.

Password Generator: frequently asked questions

Is it safe to generate passwords on a website?

Here it is, because the password is created in your browser and never sent anywhere. You can even turn off your internet after the page has loaded and it still works.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for email, banking and anything that can reset other accounts.

How accurate is this estimate?

It is as accurate as the numbers you give it. Real-world amounts such as paint, concrete or fuel vary, so allow a margin.

Is what I enter in this tool saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
