The formula
Needed score = (wanted grade - current grade x (1 - weight)) / weight.
How it works
Your course grade is a weighted mix: the exam counts for its weight, and everything before it counts for the rest. We solve that for the score you need on the exam to land on your target.
An example
You have a 82 percent going into a final worth 30 percent, and you want a 90 in the course. Needed = (90 - 82 x 0.70) / 0.30 = (90 - 57.4) / 0.30 = 108.7 percent. That cannot be done without extra credit, so a 90 is out of reach, and we tell you so.
For an 85 instead: (85 - 57.4) / 0.30 = 92 percent. That is hard but possible.
What the extremes show
The result also shows your course grade if you score 100 percent on the exam and if you score zero. That tells you the best and worst outcomes, which can calm a lot of worry before an exam.
Planning tip
Check your syllabus for how the final is weighted and whether the lowest score is dropped. If you are close to a grade boundary, find out whether your teacher rounds up.

Grade Calculator: frequently asked questions
What if the needed score is over 100%?
Then that grade is not reachable on the exam alone. Ask about extra credit, or aim for the next grade down.
What if I need a negative score?
You already have the grade you want, even with zero on the final.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is as accurate as the numbers you give it. Real-world amounts such as paint, concrete or fuel vary, so allow a margin.
Is what I enter in this tool saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
