The formula
GPA = sum of (grade points x credits) / total credits.
How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is worth grade points, and each course counts in proportion to its credits. A 4-credit course matters more than a 1-credit one. Multiply the points by the credits for each course (these are the quality points), add them up and divide by the total credits.
The standard 4.0 scale
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0 |
Some schools give an A+ 4.3 or weight honours courses extra. Enter grade points directly (for example 4.3) if yours does.
A worked example
A 3, B+ 4, A- 3, C 2 (each with its credits): A x 3 = 12, B+ x 4 = 13.2, A- x 3 = 11.1, C x 2 = 4. That is 40.3 quality points over 12 credits, so the GPA is 3.36.
Entering your courses
Write one course per line, with the grade then the credits, separated by a space: "A- 3". You can use letters or numbers like 3.5 for the grade.

GPA Calculator: frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA?
Above 3.0 is generally solid, 3.5 and above is strong, and 3.7 or higher is usually considered excellent. Requirements vary by program, scholarship and employer.
Does it handle weighted GPA?
Enter the weighted grade points yourself (for example 5.0 for an A in an AP class) instead of a letter.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is as accurate as the numbers you give it. Real-world amounts such as paint, concrete or fuel vary, so allow a margin.
Is what I enter in this tool saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
