The formula

Each person = (bill + tax + tip) / number of people. Tax and tip are both worked out on the pre-tax bill.

How the split is worked out

We add tax and tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. The tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount, which is how most people do it. For an 80 bill with 8 percent tax and an 18 percent tip, tax is 6.40, tip is 14.40, the total is 100.80, and for four people that is 25.20 each.

When the split is not even

This tool splits evenly. If one person ordered much more, a common approach is to split shared dishes evenly and add each person's own items. You can also run it more than once with different amounts.

Tips for a smooth split

  • Agree on the tip before the card comes out.
  • Round each share up to the next whole number if you pay in cash.
  • Check whether a service charge is already on the bill.

Is the tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Here it is on the pre-tax bill. Tipping on the total is also common, so raise the tip percentage slightly if you prefer that.
