The formula
The number is split into groups of three digits (thousand, million, billion, trillion), and each group is written out and joined.
Examples
| Number | In words |
|---|---|
| 1,234 | one thousand two hundred thirty-four |
| 1,000,000 | one million |
| -45 | minus forty-five |
| 3.14 | three point one four |
| 250.75 | two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents only |
Writing a cheque
The amount in words on a cheque stops anyone changing the figure. We show the dollars-and-cents form for amounts with up to two decimals. If you use another currency, swap the words "dollars" and "cents" for your own.
Style notes
We use the short scale used in the US and now in most English writing (a billion is a thousand million), hyphenate numbers from 21 to 99 and do not include "and" between hundreds and tens, the American style. In British writing it is common to say "one hundred and twenty".
