The formula

Unix time = seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. Milliseconds = seconds x 1000.

What Unix time is

Computers often store time as the number of seconds since the "epoch", midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. It does not depend on time zones or daylight saving, which makes it ideal for storing and comparing moments in databases and logs.

Seconds or milliseconds?

A timestamp with 10 digits, such as 1790000000, is in seconds. One with 13 digits, such as 1790000000000, is in milliseconds, which is what JavaScript uses. We detect which one you pasted and tell you.

Useful values

Timestamp (s)Date (UTC)
01 Jan 1970 00:00:00
10000000009 Sep 2001 01:46:40
170000000014 Nov 2023 22:13:20

The year 2038 problem

Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit number run out on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64 bits, which lasts for billions of years.

Epoch / Unix Timestamp Converter: frequently asked questions

How do I get the current timestamp?

In JavaScript, Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000). In Python, int(time.time()). In a Unix shell, date +%s.

Which time zone is the date in?

Unix time is always UTC. We also show the equivalent in your own time zone.

Does the conversion happen on my device?

Yes. Your text, colours and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Is what I enter in this converter saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.

Is this converter free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
