The formula
The JPEG is decoded onto a canvas and saved as a lossless PNG file.
When to convert JPG to PNG
PNG is a lossless format, so it is the right choice if you will edit the image repeatedly, need to place it on a background that uses transparency, or want a format that accepts no more compression damage once it has been saved.
What converting does not do
It cannot restore detail that JPG already threw away. The PNG will look the same as the JPG, and the file will usually be larger. Converting does not remove the blurry blocks that heavy JPG compression can leave.
File size
Expect the PNG to be several times bigger than the JPG for photos. For websites, WebP or JPG is usually kinder to loading speed.
Private by design
The file is read and converted in your browser. We confirm it is a real JPEG by checking its first bytes, and limit files to 25 MB and 12,000 pixels on a side.
JPG to PNG Converter: frequently asked questions
Why is the PNG bigger?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, so photos take much more space than in JPG.
Can I make the background transparent?
No. JPG has no transparency data, so there is nothing to keep. You would need an image editor to remove the background.
Does the conversion happen on my device?
Yes. Your text, colours and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded.
Is what I enter in this converter saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.
Is this converter free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
