The formula
Gross = net x (1 + VAT rate). Net = gross / (1 + VAT rate). VAT = gross - net.
Adding VAT
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. With 20 percent VAT, 100 becomes 120, of which 20 is VAT.
Removing VAT
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. 120 including 20 percent VAT is 120 / 1.2 = 100 before VAT. The VAT inside it is 20.
Common VAT and GST rates
The standard rate is 20 percent in the UK, 19 to 25 percent across much of the EU, 5 to 28 percent in India's GST bands, 10 percent in Australia and 5 percent in Canada before provincial tax. Rates and categories change, so confirm yours with the tax authority.

VAT Calculator: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
They work in a similar way: both are taxes on value added at each stage, collected by businesses. VAT is the term in Europe, and GST is used in India, Australia, Canada and some other countries.
Why is the tax I calculate by hand sometimes a cent different?
Shops usually round tax per item or per receipt, depending on local rules. Our result is rounded once at the end, so it can differ by a cent from a receipt.
Is tax charged on the price before or after a discount?
In most places tax is charged on the price you actually pay, which is after the discount. Enter the discounted price here.
Is this financial advice?
No. It gives an estimate from the numbers you enter. Real offers depend on fees, tax and the lender or provider, so check the terms before you commit.
Is what I enter in this calculator saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
