Sales Tax Calculator

Enter a price and your local sales tax rate. We show the total with tax, or the price before tax if you already paid it.

This calculator gives estimates for information only. It is not financial, tax or legal advice. Real results depend on lender terms, fees and local rules.

The formula

Total = price x (1 + rate). Price before tax = total / (1 + rate).

Adding tax

Multiply the price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. A 120 item with 8.25 percent sales tax costs 120 x 1.0825 = 129.90, which includes 9.90 of tax.

Removing tax from a total

Do not subtract the rate from the total, because the tax was added to the smaller number. Divide by 1 plus the rate instead. A 129.90 receipt at 8.25 percent had a pre-tax price of 129.90 / 1.0825 = 120.

Why we ask for your rate

Sales tax differs between states and cities, and some items are exempt. Rates change, so we do not guess. Look up your current local rate on your tax authority's site.

Sales Tax Calculator: frequently asked questions

Why is the tax I calculate by hand sometimes a cent different?

Shops usually round tax per item or per receipt, depending on local rules. Our result is rounded once at the end, so it can differ by a cent from a receipt.

Is tax charged on the price before or after a discount?

In most places tax is charged on the price you actually pay, which is after the discount. Enter the discounted price here.

Is this financial advice?

No. It gives an estimate from the numbers you enter. Real offers depend on fees, tax and the lender or provider, so check the terms before you commit.

Is what I enter in this calculator saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
