The formula
Hourly rate = annual salary / (hours per week x paid weeks per year). For a standard year: salary / 2,080.
The quick rule
A full-time job of 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year. Divide your salary by 2,080 for a rough hourly rate. 80,000 a year is about 38.46 an hour.
Adjusting for real life
If you get unpaid time off, reduce the paid weeks. If you work 37.5 hours, change the hours field. A salary also usually includes paid holidays, so your effective rate while working may be a little higher or lower than this figure suggests.
Example
| Annual salary | Hourly (2,080 hours) |
|---|---|
| 30,000 | 14.42 |
| 45,000 | 21.63 |
| 60,000 | 28.85 |
| 80,000 | 38.46 |
| 100,000 | 48.08 |
These figures are before tax. Your take-home pay depends on where you live.
