The formula
Decimal = sum of (digit x 16^position). Digits A to F stand for 10 to 15.
How hexadecimal works
Hex has sixteen digits: 0 to 9, then A (10), B (11), C (12), D (13), E (14) and F (15). Each place is worth a power of 16.
For 2F: 2 x 16 + 15 = 47. For FF: 15 x 16 + 15 = 255, which is the biggest value that fits in one byte.
Why programmers like hex
One hex digit stands for exactly four binary digits, so a byte is always two hex characters. That makes it a compact, readable way to write memory addresses, colour codes and file signatures.
Colour codes
A web colour such as #1E90FF is three hex bytes: red 1E (30), green 90 (144) and blue FF (255). Try the hex to RGB converter if that is what you are after.
