The formula

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd. a/b x c/d = ac / bd. a/b / (c/d) = ad / bc.

How to add and subtract fractions

To add or subtract, the fractions need the same denominator (the bottom number). The easy route is to cross-multiply: for 1/2 + 1/3, work out 1 x 3 + 1 x 2 = 5 on top and 2 x 3 = 6 on the bottom to get 5/6.

You can use the least common denominator for smaller numbers, but cross-multiplying always works and the calculator simplifies the result at the end.

Multiplying and dividing

Multiplying is the simplest: multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms. 2/3 x 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.

To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply. 1/2 divided by 1/4 becomes 1/2 x 4/1 = 4/2 = 2. A good way to picture it is "how many quarters fit into a half?".

Worked example with a mixed number

What is 1 3/4 + 2/3? First turn 1 3/4 into 7/4. Then 7/4 + 2/3 = (7 x 3 + 2 x 4) / 12 = 29/12, which is 2 5/12 as a mixed number.

Fraction Calculator: frequently asked questions

What happens if I divide by zero?

You get a message instead of an answer, because division by zero is undefined. The same goes for a denominator of zero.

How do I convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?

Divide the top by the bottom. The whole part is the quotient and the remainder goes over the original denominator. 29/12 is 2 remainder 5, so 2 5/12.

Can I type mixed numbers?

Yes. Type a whole number, a space and then the fraction, for example 2 3/4. Decimals like 0.75 also work and are converted into fractions.

Does the calculator reduce the answer?

Always. The result is shown in its simplest form, as a mixed number and as a decimal, so you can use whichever your homework asks for.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses standard double-precision arithmetic, accurate to about 15 significant digits. Results are rounded only for display.

Is what I enter in this calculator saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.
