The formula

Waist-to-hip ratio = waist circumference / hip circumference.

Why it matters

Where you carry fat matters as much as how much. Fat around the middle is linked to a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat on the hips and thighs, and waist-to-hip ratio picks that up where BMI does not.

What the numbers mean

RiskWomenMen
LowUnder 0.80Under 0.90
Moderate0.80 to 0.850.90 to 1.00
HighAbove 0.85Above 1.00

The WHO treats a ratio above 0.85 for women and 0.90 for men as abdominal obesity.

How to measure

Stand up straight and relaxed. Measure the waist at the narrowest point between the ribs and hips, or the navel if that is hard to find, and the hips at the widest part of your buttocks. Use the same units for both.

Example

A waist of 80 cm and hips of 100 cm give 0.80. For a woman that sits at the border of low and moderate risk.
