The formula

Tip = bill x tip %. Total = bill + tip. Each person = total / number of people.

How much to tip

Customs vary. In the US, 15 to 20 percent is standard for table service and 18 to 22 percent is common for good service. In many European countries a service charge is included and rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 percent is enough. In Japan tipping is not expected at all. Check what is customary where you are.

Quick mental maths

Move the decimal one place to find 10 percent, then double it for 20. For 15 percent, add half of the 10 percent figure. On a bill of 86.40: 10 percent is 8.64, so 20 percent is 17.28 and 15 percent is 12.96.

Splitting the bill

Put the number of people in the split box. We divide the total evenly. The round-up option raises each share to a whole number, which makes cash payments easier and slightly increases the tip.
