The formula

Local time = UTC time + the zone offset on that date (offsets change with daylight saving).

Why the date matters

Offsets are not fixed. New York is 4 hours behind UTC in summer and 5 hours behind in winter. Because we use the actual date you enter, the answer is right for that day, including the weeks in spring and autumn when countries change clocks on different dates.

Planning a meeting across time zones

Pick a time in your own zone, convert to the others, and check that nobody lands in the middle of the night. A call at 9:00 in New York is 14:00 in London and 18:30 in Mumbai in early October. In late March the gap changes for a couple of weeks because the US and UK switch their clocks on different dates.

A few offsets worth knowing

  • India is UTC+5:30 all year and does not change its clocks.
  • Dubai is UTC+4 all year.
  • Most of the US and Europe change clocks, but on different dates, so the gap between them briefly changes twice a year.
