The formula

Devine (men): 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft. Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Four formulas, one rough answer

The Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi formulas were all written between the 1960s and 1980s, some originally to help doctors dose medicines. They all start from 5 feet and add a set weight for each extra inch, which is why their answers are close but not the same. We show the average too.

The healthy BMI range is better

These formulas give one number, but there is no single ideal weight. The range from BMI 18.5 to 24.9 is wider and more realistic. A 180 cm man, for example, is in the healthy range at anything from about 60 to 81 kg.

What they do not know

They ignore frame size, muscle, age and how you carry weight. Someone with a large frame or lots of muscle can be healthy well above the formula's answer. Use these as guidance and look at how you feel, your fitness and your blood tests.
