The formula
Due date = mating date + 63 days (range 57 to 70). From ovulation: 63 days (range 61 to 65).
How long is a dog pregnant?
About 63 days, or nine weeks, counted from ovulation. Counted from mating the range is wider, around 57 to 70 days, because sperm can survive for several days before fertilising an egg. If your vet confirmed ovulation with a progesterone test, choose that option for a tighter window.
Timeline
- Around day 25: an ultrasound can confirm pregnancy.
- Around day 28 to 30: a vet may feel the puppies by palpation.
- From about day 42: move to a good-quality puppy food, as advised by your vet.
- About a week before the due date: prepare a quiet whelping area and take her temperature as your vet advises.
Call your vet if
Labour starts but no puppy is born after about two hours of strong straining, she goes past day 70, she has green or bloody discharge before the first puppy, or she seems unwell. This calculator is a guide and is no replacement for veterinary care.
