The formula

Mean = sum of all values / number of values. Median = middle value when sorted. Mode = most frequent value. Range = largest - smallest.

Mean, median and mode: what is the difference?

The mean is the "average" most people mean: add everything up and divide by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle number once the list is in order. The mode is the number that appears most often.

They can tell very different stories. If five people earn 30, 32, 35, 38 and 400 (in thousands), the mean is 107 but the median is 35. The median is the better picture of a typical person because one very high value drags the mean up.

A worked example

For 12, 15, 18, 15 and 22: the sum is 82 and there are 5 numbers, so the mean is 16.4. Sorted, the list is 12, 15, 15, 18, 22, so the median is 15. The number 15 appears twice, so it is the mode. The range is 22 - 12 = 10.

Which one should I use?

 • Use the mean when values are fairly evenly spread, such as test scores in a class.
 • Use the median when there are extreme values, such as house prices or incomes.
 • Use the mode for the most common category, such as the most popular shoe size.

Average Calculator: frequently asked questions

What if there is no mode?

That happens when every value appears once. The calculator says so instead of inventing one. If two values tie, both are shown.

How is the median found with an even number of values?

Take the two middle numbers and average them. For 2, 4, 6, 8 the median is (4 + 6) / 2 = 5.

Do I have to separate numbers with commas?

No. Commas, spaces and new lines all work, so you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses standard double-precision arithmetic, accurate to about 15 significant digits. Results are rounded only for display.

Is what I enter in this calculator saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, so what you enter is not sent to our servers. We only count, anonymously, whether a tool ran successfully.

Is this calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and has no usage limit.
